ABOUT BALI BOTANICAL GARDEN

General Information

Bali Botanical Garden, spanning 154 hectares, is Indonesia’s inaugural botanical garden, established in 1959. Located in Bedugul, it showcases the rich biodiversity of Indonesia’s plant life.

History of Kebun Raya Eka Karya

The roots of Bali Botanical Garden, “Eka Karya,” trace back to the visionary efforts of Prof. Ir. Kusnoto Setyodiwiryo, Director of the Center for Natural Research and Head of the Indonesian Botanical Gardens. Collaborating with I Made Taman, Head of the Institute for Nature Conservation and Preservation, their dream of establishing a botanical garden beyond Java took shape in Bali. In 1955, negotiations with the Bali Regional Government culminated in 1958 with the official offer of a 50-hectare site, encompassing the Candikuning reforestation forest adjacent to the Batukau Nature Reserve.

Inauguration and Evolution: “Eka Karya” Unveiled

The inauguration of Bali’s “Eka Karya” Botanical Garden occurred on July 15, 1959, a testament to the realization of the Regional Head’s decree. The moniker “Eka Karya” means “One Result of Work.” I Made Taman has proposed it, signifying the first botanical garden in Indonesia. Initially intended for Gymnosperms, the botanical garden’s collection expanded with specimens like Araucaria bidwillii, Cupressus sempervirens, and Pinus masoniana imported from Bogor and Cibodas Botanical Gardens. Over time, management transitions occurred between the Bali Provincial Forestry Service and the Botanical Garden itself, shaping its journey through ups and downs since its official establishment.

Under the leadership of I Gede Ranten, B.Sc. (1975–1977), the botanical garden expanded to 129.2 hectares, inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ir. Tubagus Bachtiar Rifai in 1976. Subsequent leadership, such as under Ir. Mustaid Siregar, M.Si (2001–2008), witnessed further expansion to 157.5 hectares. Initially dedicated to gymnosperm conservation, the botanical garden has evolved into an ex-situ plant conservation hub for tropical mountain flora in eastern Indonesia. As a Technical Implementation Unit, the Bali “Eka Karya” Botanical Garden continues to thrive as a centre for plant conservation, blending history with ongoing dedication to preserving Indonesia’s rich biodiversity.
