General Information
Batukaru Temple, also known as Pura Luhur Batukaru, is a sacred Hindu temple located on the southern slope of Mount Batukaru in Tabanan, Bali. Nestled at 2,270 meters, it is one of Bali’s critical directional temples, protecting the island from evil spirits.
The History
Dating back to the 11th century AD, Luhur Batukaru Temple is integral to Bali’s cultural and spiritual legacy. Its inception, contemporaneous with prominent temples such as Pura Besakih and Pura Uluwatu, is credited to the revered Mpu Kuturan, who played a pivotal role in forming the Sad Kahyangan temples. Despite limited historical records post the 11th century, the temple regained prominence in 1605 AD when Babad Buleleng documented the unfortunate damage inflicted by King Ki Gusti Ngurah Panji Sakti.
According to historical accounts, King Panji Sakti’s ill-fated decision to expand his kingdom into Tabanan led to the destruction of Luhur Batukaru Temple. Strikingly, as the temple faced desecration, a natural intervention occurred: thousands of aggressive wasps swarmed, thwarting the king’s aggression. This unexpected event compelled King Panji Sakti and his forces to retreat, leaving behind a damaged temple reduced to ruins. It wasn’t until 1959 that restoration efforts commenced, revitalizing Luhur Batukaru to its present-day majestic form. Subsequent attention and support from the regional government since 1977 have contributed to the temple’s ongoing preservation.
A Sanctuary of Renewal and Ceremonial Significance
Within the sacred grounds of Pura Luhur Batukaru, intricate features unfold. The temple encompasses a rejuvenating spring, divided into ceremonial and cleansing sections. The spring’s inner sanctum (jeroan) is reserved explicitly for invoking holy water (tirtha) during ceremonies. Simultaneously, the outer section serves as a purification space for devotees to bathe and cleanse themselves before engaging in prayer. As a beacon of spiritual continuity, Luhur Batukaru Temple beckons visitors to explore its historical tapestry, where reverence for tradition harmonizes with the timeless beauty of Bali’s spiritual landscape.
