ABOUT KEHEN TEMPLE

General Information

Located in the village of Bangli, Kehen Temple is a spiritual haven boasting traditional Balinese architecture and lush surroundings. The temple complex is divided into multiple levels, each revealing intricately carved structures, vibrant sculptures, and beautifully adorned gates. As visitors ascend through the temple grounds, they are greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, adding to the overall enchantment of the experience.

History

Establishing the precise founding date of Pura Kehen presents challenges. However, the historical evidence is derived from three copper inscriptions associated with the temple. Notably, the third inscription, dated Saka 1126 (1204 AD), instructs residents during significant ceremonies at Kehen Temple. This inscription references King Sri Dhanadhiraja, the progeny of King Bhatara Parameswara and the grandson of Bhatara Guru Sri Adhikunti and Queen Bhatara Sri Dhanadewi.

The first inscription, composed in Old Balinese with 18 lines, mentions “Hyang Karinama” and the presence of Hyang Api in Simpat Bunut Village. This inscription holds historical significance and is estimated to be from 804-836 Saka (882-914 AD). The second inscription, comprising ten lines in Old Javanese, references Senapati Kuturan, Sapatha, and royal employees, dating back to the Saka years 938-971 (1016-1049 AD).

The evolution of the name “Hyang Api” in the first inscription to “Hyang Kehen” in the third inscription eventually led to the name Pura Kehen. This evolution places the existence of Kehen Temple in the late 9th or early 10th century AD, aligning with the historical context of Bangli Village as detailed in inscription no—705 of Kehen Temple.
