ABOUT PURI AGUNG KARANGASEM

General Information

Puri Agung Karangasem, or Karangasem Royal Palace, is located in Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem Regency, approximately 2 hours from Bali’s international airport. Built in the 19th Century by the ruling kings of Karangasem, the palace served as the royal family’s residence and the kingdom’s administrative centre. Today, Puri Agung Karangasem stands as a cultural landmark and a living museum, preserving the traditions and heritage of Bali’s royal legacy for future generations to admire and appreciate.

History

Formation of Karangasem Kingdom (17th Century)

The history of the Karangasem Kingdom traces back to the 17th Century when the Gelgel dynasty established its dominance in Bali. Anak Agung Ngurah Karangasem, a powerful and influential figure within the Gelgel royal family, played a vital role in the founding of the Karangasem Kingdom. The kingdom’s territorial influence grew steadily during this period, and the ruling family began to consolidate power in the eastern part of Bali.

Rise to Prominence (18th Century)

In the 18th Century, the Karangasem Kingdom witnessed a significant rise to Prominence under the leadership of Anak Agung Gede Ngurah. The kingdom’s territorial expansion continued, and it emerged as a dominant force in the eastern regions of Bali. The rulers of Karangasem fostered economic prosperity through trade, particularly with neighbouring islands, contributing to the kingdom’s affluence.

Cultural Flourishing and Architecture (19th Century)

The 19th Century marked a period of cultural flourishing for the Karangasem Kingdom. Anak Agung Gede Jelantik, a notable ruler, played a pivotal role in the kingdom’s cultural and artistic development. The construction and expansion of Puri Agung Karangasem, the royal palace, began during this time, showcasing a blend of Balinese, Chinese, and European architectural influences. The castle became a symbol of the kingdom’s grandeur and artistic richness.

Dutch Colonial Encounters (Early 20th Century)

In the early 20th Century, they challenged the Karangasem Kingdom as Dutch colonial forces sought to assert control over Bali. Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, also known as I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, led the kingdom during this period. The Dutch intervention led to political changes and tensions, impacting the autonomy of the Balinese kingdoms. Puri Agung Karangasem was partially damaged due to conflicts with the Dutch.

Decline and Impact of Dutch Colonialism (Late 20th Century)

The later part of the 20th Century saw a decline in the autonomy of the Karangasem Kingdom due to the influence of Dutch colonial rule. The traditional power structure underwent significant transformations, and the once-sovereign kingdoms of Bali became integrated into the Dutch colonial administration. The legacy of the Karangasem Kingdom persisted, but its political influence waned.

Today, remnants of the Karangasem Kingdom’s history can be explored in the cultural and architectural heritage left behind, notably in Puri Agung Karangasem and other historical sites throughout the region.
