Sultanate Water Castle – Taman Sari Yogyakarta
Taman Sari Yogyakarta is also known as Taman Sari Water Castle, a beautiful water park and formerly a royal garden of the Yogyakarta sultanate. It is built in the middle of the 18th century and situated in the centre of Yogyakarta City or just a step from Sultan Palace. Furthermore, this area has multiple functions such as resting, workshop, meditation, defence as well as a hiding place. Meanwhile, Taman Sari consists of four distinct areas such as a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west, a bathing complex in the centre, a complex of pavilions and pools in the south, and a smaller lake in the east. However, only the central bathing complex is well preserved today. Meanwhile, the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement. History

This water castle is commenced during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, the first sultan of Yogyakarta. However, this building is completed by Sultan Hamengkubuwono II. Meanwhile, this place is well known as a bathing place called Pachetokan Spring since Sunan Amengkurat IV’s reign 1719 – 1726. Furthermore, according to Mamana Holy Book mentioning that the project leader of this building is Tumenggung Mangundipura. He had learned the European architecture in Batavia (now Jakarta) during travelling to this city twice. Therefore, the form of Taman Sari’s building is adopting the European style. The construction had started since 1758 AD and had destroyed cause of the British invasion 1872.
