Devil’s Tears Nusa Lembongan: Bali’s Most Dramatic Coastal View

Devil’s Tears Nusa Lembongan is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Bali’s surrounding islands. Unlike the white-sand beaches Bali is famous for, this coastal landmark offers dramatic limestone cliffs where massive waves crash against the rocks, sending seawater high into the air. The powerful bursts of water, combined with the roaring sound of the ocean, create an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Located on the southwestern coast of Nusa Lembongan, Devil’s Tears has become a favorite destination for photographers, nature lovers, and travelers searching for breathtaking ocean views. During the late afternoon, the sunlight often creates colorful rainbows within the sea spray, while sunset paints the sky with warm orange and golden hues. Although the scenery is beautiful, visitors should always respect the safety barriers and keep a safe distance from the cliff edges due to the unpredictable waves.

Whether you are visiting Nusa Lembongan for a day trip or spending several nights on the island, Devil’s Tears is a must-see stop that perfectly showcases the untamed beauty of Indonesia’s southern coastline.

ABOUT DEVIL'S TEARS

General Information

Devil’s Tears is a natural coastal viewpoint formed by centuries of ocean erosion. Instead of waterfalls or sandy beaches, the attraction features rugged limestone cliffs with narrow rock formations where waves are forced into small openings. As the water rushes into these gaps, it erupts into the air like a giant fountain, creating the famous “tears” that inspired the location’s name.

The attraction is located in Jungut Batu Village on Nusa Lembongan, approximately a 30 to 45-minute fast boat ride from Sanur Harbour in mainland Bali. After arriving on the island, visitors can reach Devil’s Tears within around 10 to 15 minutes by scooter or private transfer.

Unlike many other coastal attractions, Devil’s Tears is famous not for swimming but for observing nature’s incredible force. The best conditions usually occur during high tide or when ocean swells are strong, producing enormous splashes that can rise several meters above the cliffs. The site is also considered one of the best sunset viewpoints in Nusa Lembongan.

Visitors will find walking paths, viewing platforms, small cafés, parking areas, and nearby accommodations around the attraction. While the pathways are relatively easy to explore, the limestone surface can become slippery from sea spray, making appropriate footwear highly recommended.

Things To Do at Devil’s Tears Nusa Lembongan

Watch the Giant Ocean Spray

The main highlight is watching enormous waves collide with the cliffs. Every few minutes, depending on the tide, powerful waves explode into the air, creating an impressive display of water, sound, and mist. Each wave is slightly different, making every visit unique.

Enjoy One of Nusa Lembongan’s Best Sunsets

Late afternoon is widely considered the best time to visit. As the sun begins to set, the coastline glows with golden light while the sea spray often forms beautiful rainbows. The dramatic scenery makes this one of the island’s most photographed locations.

Capture Stunning Landscape Photography

Photography enthusiasts will enjoy countless opportunities to capture dramatic seascapes. The contrast between the turquoise ocean, rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and colorful skies creates excellent compositions throughout the day.

If you’re lucky, you’ll also catch the perfect moment when the spray rises just as the sunlight shines through it.

Explore the Coastal Walking Trail

Several walking paths connect Devil’s Tears with nearby coastal viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll discover rocky cliffs, tropical vegetation, hidden viewpoints, and peaceful spots overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Walking the coastline allows visitors to experience different perspectives of the waves while enjoying the fresh sea breeze.

Relax at Nearby Cafés

After exploring the cliffs, many visitors stop at nearby cafés overlooking the ocean. These cafés provide a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy fresh coconut water, coffee, local dishes, or seafood while watching the waves from a safe distance.

Travel Tips

To enjoy your visit safely and comfortably, consider the following tips:

  • Visit during the late afternoon for cooler temperatures and the best sunset views.
  • Never cross safety ropes or barriers, even if you want better photos.
  • Stay alert for unexpected large waves, often called rogue waves.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip because the limestone rocks can become slippery.
  • Keep cameras and mobile phones protected from sea spray.
  • Bring drinking water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Avoid standing too close to cliff edges, especially during high tide.
  • If traveling from Bali, book your fast boat tickets in advance during peak holiday seasons.
