General Information
Gunung Kawi Temple near Tampaksiring, Bali, is an ancient Hindu archaeological complex shrouded in mystique. This revered site showcases unique rock-cut shrines and is surrounded by the soothing ambience of the Pakerisan River.
History
Constructed during the 11th century AD, spanning the reigns of King Udayana to Anak Wungsu, the Gunung Kawi Temple stands as a testament to Bali’s rich historical legacy. King Udayana, a prominent figure from the Warmadewa Dynasty, entered into matrimony with Princess Gunapriya Dharma Patni of Java, resulting in the birth of the children Erlangga and Anak Wungsu.
In adulthood, Erlangga ascended to the throne in East Java, while Anak Wungsu governed Bali. It is believed that the Gunung Kawi Temple took shape during this era, supported by archaeological evidence like an inscription on the pseudo-door using Kediri letters, stating “haji lumah ing jalu,” symbolically implying the king’s burial in Jalu.
The term “jalu,” denoting the spurs on a rooster, holds associations with weaponry such as a keris or Pakerisan. The Pakerisan River, also known as Tukad Pakerisan, flows between the temple’s cliffs, reinforcing its historical context. Dutch researchers recovered it circa 1920. This archaeological marvel offers a captivating glimpse into Bali’s regal past.
