Tirta Empul Temple, also known as Tampaksiring Temple, is a sacred water temple in Tampaksiring, Bali, Indonesia. The temple’s history dates back to the 10th century during the Warmadewa dynasty. Although, it underwent significant expansions in later centuries. The temple is renowned for its holy spring water, believed to have powerful purifying properties.

The legend behind Tirta Empul traces back to the mythical tale of the god Indra and his battle with the wicked king Mayadenawa. In the epic confrontation, Indra pierced the earth to release the elixir of immortality, creating the sacred spring at Tirta Empul. The temple was subsequently built to commemorate this event and has since become a site for purification rituals and religious ceremonies.

The Balinese Hindu devotees frequently visit Tirta Empul to partake in a unique ritual called “melukat,” involving a series of cleansing baths in the holy spring.
