The legend behind Tirta Empul traces back to the mythical tale of the god Indra and his battle with the wicked king Mayadenawa. In the epic confrontation, Indra pierced the earth to release the elixir of immortality, creating the sacred spring at Tirta Empul. The temple was subsequently built to commemorate this event and has since become a site for purification rituals and religious ceremonies.
The Balinese Hindu devotees frequently visit Tirta Empul to partake in a unique ritual called “melukat,” involving a series of cleansing baths in the holy spring.
