History

Origins of Perancak Village

The history of Gede Perancak Temple, or Pura Gede Perancak, intertwines with the origins of Perancak Village. Formerly known as “Tanjung Ketapang,” the village’s transformation occurred amidst the collapse of the Majapahit Kingdom, catalyzing significant cultural shifts in the region.

Arrival of Danghyang Nirartha

During this period of flux, the esteemed Hindu sage Danghyang Nirartha, renowned for his profound spiritual wisdom, embarked on a journey through Bali. His arrival at Tanjung Ketapang marked a pivotal moment in the village’s history, as he introduced Hindu teachings to its inhabitants, providing guidance where none had existed before. Despite his revered status, the village leader, I Gusti Ngurah, failed to acknowledge Nirartha’s authority, leading to a fateful encounter at the temple where Ngurah resided.

The Birth of Gede Perancak Temple

In an act of defiance against Ngurah’s demands for worship, Nirartha’s divine powers shattered the stone upon which Ngurah sat, compelling the ruler to flee in fear. Recognizing Nirartha’s extraordinary abilities, the villagers affectionately dubbed him “PEDANDA SAKTI WAU RAUH” and erected the Gede Perancak Temple in his honour. The temple, derived from the broken stone (“Encak”) at the site of Nirartha’s intervention, symbolizes the triumph of spirituality over arrogance, shaping the identity of Perancak Village and its enduring reverence for Balinese heritage.
