ABOUT TIRTA GANGGA WATERPARK

General Information

Tirta Gangga Waterpark is located in the village of Ababi, approximately 11 kilometres north of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem Regency in East Bali. Built-in the early 20th century by the royal family of Karangasem, the waterpark spans over 1.2 hectares and is renowned for its natural springs, decorative pools, and traditional Balinese architecture. Today, Tirta Gangga Waterpark is a popular tourist destination and cultural landmark, attracting visitors worldwide with its serene ambience and scenic beauty.

History

From January 2, 1948, to September 16, 1948, the king of Ida Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem constructed Tirta Gangga. It wasn’t until 1970 that Tirta Gangga opened its doors as a tourist destination, welcoming visitors worldwide.

Originally conceived as a recreational retreat for the royal family of Karangasem, Tirta Gangga evolved into a public space, as a historical inscription indicates on black marble. Furthermore, the King of Karangasem and Dutch representatives proclamated it and declared Tirta Gangga Park open to the public. The local communities of Ababi Village, Peladung Village, and Temega Village played a crucial role in the park’s construction. They have showcased a collaborative effort.

In its early years, Tirta Gangga Waterpark bore the name Rijasa Park. The king of Ida Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem has given this name. However, a pivotal moment occurred during the king’s meditation under a lychee tree, where he received a revelation from Goddess Ganga. The divine message urged the king to rename the park, and thus, Tirta Gangga Waterpark was born. Tirta Gangga carries profound significance, symbolizing the sacred waters flowing from the Ganges River in India. “Tirta” denotes holy water, and “Gangga” represents the revered river in India, making Tirta Gangga synonymous with holy water from the Ganges River.
