Spanning approximately 1.2 square kilometres, this pristine lake captivates visitors with its crystal-clear waters and verdant surroundings, making it a sought-after destination for pre-wedding photography sessions.
History
In the period spanning from the 10th to the 14th centuries, the Tamblingan Lake region served as a central settlement, with its focal point situated on Mount Lesung to the south of the lake. Subsequently, for reasons lost to history, the population underwent a migration, dispersing into four distinct areas near the lake. These four villages collectively became known as Catur Desa, translating to “four villages,” and include Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing, and Umejero Villages. These villages share spiritual bonds and are responsible for safeguarding the sanctity of Tamblingan Lake and its surrounding temples.
The etymology of Tamblingan unfolds from two Balinese words: “Tamba,” signifying medicine, and “Elingang,” denoting memory or spiritual prowess. According to the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul, local folklore recounts when the area faced an epidemic. Seeking a remedy, a purified individual descended to a small lake beneath the village, fetching water for medicinal purposes. The water became a potent medicine through prayers and spiritual abilities, healing the town. The fusion of “Tamba” and “Elingang” metamorphosed with time into the evocative name Tamblingan.
