ABOUT TAMAN SARI WATER CASTLE YOGYAKARTA

General Information

The Sultan of Yogyakarta constructed the expansive Taman Sari Water Castle, commonly called the Water Palace, in the eighteenth century. Originally designed as a royal garden and pleasure palace, Taman Sari served as a retreat for the sultan and his concubines. The palace features a series of elegant pavilions, bathing pools, and underground tunnels, surrounded by lush gardens and tranquil water features.

History

Taman Sari Water Castle, located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, carries a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Built during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I of the Mataram Sultanate, it served as a royal garden and pleasure complex for the sultan and his family. “Taman Sari” translates to “Beautiful Garden,” reflecting its serene and picturesque surroundings.

Constructed between 1758 and 1765, Taman Sari was designed as a place of relaxation and recreation for the royal court. It featured an elaborate network of water gardens, bathing pools, pavilions, and meditation chambers spread across a vast area. The architectural style combines Javanese, Islamic, and European influences, reflecting the cultural diversity of the Mataram Sultanate.

One of the most distinctive features of Taman Sari is its underground mosque, known as Sumur Gumuling. This unique mosque is accessed through underground passages and features a central dome with four smaller domes surrounding it. It symbolizes the five pillars of Islam.

During its heyday, Taman Sari served as a retreat for the royal family and a venue for cultural events and ceremonies. However, its glory days were short-lived. In 1812, an earthquake severely damaged the complex, leading to its gradual decline.

Despite its partial ruin, Taman Sari remains a fascinating historical site and a testament to the grandeur of the Mataram Sultanate. In recent years, efforts have been made to restore and preserve the remaining structures. The place allows visitors to experience the beauty and mystique of this once-splendid water castle.

Today, Taman Sari Water Castle is a popular tourist destination in Yogyakarta. It was attracting visitors from around the world who came to marvel at its architectural beauty and immerse themselves in its rich history.
